In February 2021, I bought a beginners needle felting kit, and had a go!
I was instantly excited by the art form, and in particular the sculptural aspect. I had previously explored making 3D objects in knit and crochet but through sculpting with wool I have discovered a freedom of expression that I had never imagined.

The process involves stabbing at wool with a barbed needle which entwines the fibres tighter and tighter together until a firm felt is achieved. You can feel the change in the wool under your fingers as you work it, which is so satisfying.

I am particularly drawn to exploring animal and bird forms and have started to incorporate wet felting techniques as well as sewn fabrics and embroidery into some of my pieces.
